Val McDermid grew up in a Scottish mining community and read English at Oxford. She was a journalist for 16 years before turning to writing full-time. Her bestselling novels have been translated into over 30 languages, and her many awards include the Gold Dagger, the Los Angeles Times Book Award, and the Stonewall Award. Her work has been adapted for the award-winning TV series Wire in the Blood. She lives in the northeast of England with her son and partner. Val is a (mostly) silent partner in Bywater.
