JUDE’S FAVOURITE BOOKS OF 2022

Hell Bent by Calista Lynne

Hell Bent made me terribly uncomfortable and I couldn’t stop reading. It’s brilliantly written, with very visual descriptions of all the hellish planes and creatures. The juxtaposition of Ashmodai’s cynicism, in his very specific not-your-usual-demon way, with Jules’ youthful sarcasm, as she tries to be cool and make sense of life and hell, results in some hilarious moments in an otherwise bittersweet story.” —Jude in the Stars

THE WASHINGTON POSTS ‘ 12 BEST THRILLERS AND MYSTERY NOVELS OF 2022

Knock off The Hat by Richard Stevenson

“Stevenson, whose Donald Strachey series featuring a gay detective revamped the genre, died this year, shortly before the publication of this standout. (Stevenson, writing under his real name, Richard Lipez, was also a frequent Washington Post reviewer.) In post-World War II Philadelphia, detective Clifford Waterman is trying to help a man charged with “disorderly conduct” following a raid at a gay bar. The seemingly small case sends Waterman into a world of corruption involving a dangerous judge who preys on the city’s gay population.” —The Washington Post
